I purchased this because it was in a good singing key for me, and because the piano accompaniment looked interesting. Evaluating only the first two pages, there were a few things I missed. So much of the chord structure is not just creative license, but just bad chording. Very jarring...

, and just sounds like mistakes. There's no way I can sing with this accompaniment--too bad I already paid for it. In addition, some of the melody is rewritten, and makes absolutely no sense. Finally, some of the words are changed. I recognize it's public domain, and the arranger can do pretty much whatever he wants with it, but it's confusing, and the rewritten lyrics are not as strong as the original. All in all, not a very good arrangement.

Fun to sing, and it feels good when you sing it! And the accompaniment has lots of variety. And the finish is glorious! Now about the arranger: I had questions about the terms, and he provided a quick response. I confided that I did not like the archaic phrase in...

the third verse “Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother.” These were very forward thinking words in the 1800’s, but they make people cringe today. His response was to rearrange that bit of music and update the lyric. Now the words are so much better, and bring out the idea of brotherhood and the end of oppression for all. Although it is a little thing, I think he fixed the one flaw in O Holy Night. Now audiences can enjoy all three verses. So many thanks to James Nathaniel Holland for creating not only a good arrangement, but being so good to work with!
