Composed by Daniel Pinkham. Advent, Christmas, 20th Century. Choral score. E.C. Schirmer Publishing #6156. Published by E.C. Schirmer Publishing (EC.6156).

ISBN 600313461569. UPC: 600313461569. 8.5" x 11" inches. English, Latin. Text: Medieval English.

The anonymous text (here in slightly altered form and with modern punctuation) is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, manuscript iii, f.2v. A modern edition is Mediæval Carols, Musica Britannica,Vol. 4. The text is typically macaronic, that is to say a mixture of Latin and English. The Mediaeval Carol is frequently found in rondo form - a Burden (refrain) alternating with verses. The verses may well have been sung by a soloist with the whole group falling in to sing the Burden. The present setting tries to emulate the popular nature of these early carols. A hint of the original 15th century tune may be spotted in the refrain. Gabriel is frequently represented in iconographical sources as playing the horn. Duration: 4'00.
