By Steve Lockwood. By Steve Lockwood. Arranged by Steve Lockwood. Jazz,Multicultural,World. Score (Chords/Lyrics). 6 pages. Stephen Lockwood #747382. Published by Stephen Lockwood (A0.1147194).

Music for acoustic jazz trio: (Piano/Bass/Drums). Nightfall is a "jazz tone poem". The composition concerns a prize winning short story written by the author Isaac Asimov. It concerns a planet that orbits around two suns. The planet has a surviving civilization that sees sunset only once in the course of a lifetime. At a certain time and place in their orbital path, both suns do actually set and Nightfall actually occurs. When this happens the population of this planet, since it has never seen the sun(s) set, believes that an apocalyptic end is occurring and destroys the worlds environment, thinking that soon they will all die. After a few days pass, one of the suns rises again, and the people suddenly realize that all the destruction they have caused was ill-fated, and that their lives can proceed as they were. Slowly, they begin to rebuild their world, realizing that they must never make this mistake again. The tragedy is, that they will all pass before this "double sunset" occurs again. When this happens, all survivors of the new generation will respond as all previous generations have, creating the same tragedy ad infinitum. The music reflects this tragedy.
