"Miroirs" - Ravel dedicated each of these five piano pieces to a member of the Parisian artistic circle "Les Apaches." Ravel also belonged to this circle of poets, painters and musicians, giving first performances of many of his works at gatherings of this illustrious group. In "Miroirs" he went a step further than in "Jeux d'eau." The music was to sound as if it came from a sketchbook. The bold harmony irritated his contemporaries at first but pointed the way ahead for Ravel's subsequent works. This famous cycle - it also contains the well-known "Alborada del gracioso" - is now available in Henle Urtext in a particularly clear and larger format with an extensive commentary.

  • April 29, 2019 Excellent Henley quality as usual

I got this just for Une barque sur l'ocean. The quality and print are excellent as usual for Henle versions. The print is easy to read. I'm not sure why, but this Henle version is a slightly larger sheet size than most standard sheet music. This was my...

first foray into Ravel, and frankly, into the impressionist era along with Debussy. I've of course played the more well known Claire de lune et al, but lately I've been so intrigued by water-themed music — this piece, along with Ravel's Jeux d'eau, and Debussy's Reflets dans l'eau. "Une barque..." requires advanced techniques, but on the scale of difficult pieces, it is not too technically difficult.
