The first four books of this course are excellent, but with either level 4 or 5, I would recommend switching to something else. There are several problems with the intermediate levels of this method: There are no examples of original classical works. Every piece is simplified or arranged in some...

way. I find that out of balance. Arrangements are used when the original is accessible. Beethoven’s Sonatina in G is here as an arrangement that is no easier than the original. Why? Ornamentation is not always taught correctly. The symbol for inverted mordant was a trill symbol in Bach and Scarlatti’s Day, but a Scarlatti Sonata is used to teach (incorrectly) an inverted mordant. There is no discussion of the periods of music or of style. Everything is interpreted according to the rules of the romantic period. Just use the first 4 or 5 books of the series. Then consider something like the Bastien Literature books going forward.
