    Put aside what you used to think about Schaum methods and give this a fresh look. This is a brand new product, written by son Wesley Schaum. Some of the music of the first edition is carried over, but much of the music is new. The reading approach is intervallic...

    . There is an extensive introductory section that develops key names, rhythm, and beginning notation concepts. The first pieces use printed letters while notation concepts are being taught. Once notation begins, both notes and intervals are carefully controlled. New notes progress outward from middle C as expected. Eighth notes, sharps, flats, naturals, and key signatures are all taught in the primer, thankfully. Most pieces remain in the same hand position throughout. This is one of the few primers that is tall rather than wide. My students seem to like that, as it makes their book appear more grown up. The pictures are subdued, and they do not detract from the music. This is an excellent book to use as a first method book.
