This work was composed for an organ with 2 manuals and pedals minimum.  It would make for not only effective recital and lesson material but a place could be easily found for it in the worship service where it would be well suited to the needs of a very quiet offertory or a piece for the dedication of children.  This is a very tender and soft cradle song cast in, not surprisingly, AABA song form.  It was dedicated to the memory of the composer's older brother who was born with a condition that took his life as an infant at only 6 months of age.  This music consists of a trio in 3 voices framed on both sides by a compelling song tune which is first introduced voice by voice and harmonized in 4 parts in the home key.  The melody of this tune may be brought out using a solo reed the first time it is heard.  This A section is then repeated in an unrelated key (G Major) in trio texture with a slight quickening of tempo.  Here the color reed switches to the left hand and a flute color appears in the right hand.  The B section which follows is truncated, stunted in length, surprising in its haunting simplicity, and consists of nothing more than a very short transitional passage which functions to bring about a return to the home key.  Here the tempo slows down, the harmony evaporates, and the tenor and bass voices take turns soloing the first few notes of the tune inverted, one at a time.  This is immediately followed by the final return of the A section which reintroduces the theme voice by voice in imitation at the interval of a 3rd using a Celeste stop in an expressive division.  A short coda having a final chord chromatically altered with a sharpened and flatted 5th 2 octaves apart before resolving closes this music very quietly and peacefully in 5 voices employing a double pedal in the radiant home key of B Major.  In this work the stretch for the hands is kept at an octave or less.  Registration suggestions are included with the score.  Length:  58 measures.  Duration:  3:17.  Composer Bio page:  OrganBench.com .
