A musical depiction of the African mountain Kilimanjaro is bold and aggressive in spots and lush and lyrical in others. It is exactly why we love the music of Alan Lee Silva so much.
Written in 6/8 time, Kilimanjaro evokes the intensity of attempting to ascend one of the world's tallest peaks and the exhilaration of finally reaching the top. The dramatic tone resonates from the outset with an urgent sounding introduction in B minor. Violin 1 carries a pressing ascending melody and is supported by accentedmarcato figures in the rest of the ensemble. After the introduction in mm. 1-8, the piece follows an AABB form. The A-sections (mm. 9-16 and mm. 17-28) depict a rigorous ascent, and the B-section (mm. 29-44) perhaps pronounces a successful journey with views from magnificent vistas. The trek begins in m. 9 with violin I carrying the urgent tune over a spare accompaniment in violin 2 and viola. The momentum continues, and breadth isadded as the low strings join in the accompaniment in m. 16. A four- measure build in the ensemble in mm. 21-25 delivers the piece upward, where it shifts to espressivo/ legato playing and soars in m. 29 led by violin 1.Gradually quieting in mm. 44-48, the intensity returns in m. 49 where the low strings drive the melody forward, accompanied by pulsing accents in the upper strings. In mm. 57-72, violin 1 leads the group with a series of variations on the A-melody, culminating in a dramatic pyramid effect in mm. 65-68. After the caesura in m. 68, the piece builds for four measures in mm. 69-72. This leads once more to an even more dynamic B-section (mm. 73-84), where the full orchestra soars and plays all out with a beautiful tone.Measure 85 begins the vigorous charge to the end, closing with aggressive ensemble figures in mm. 89-92 that ascend and build to a heroic conclusion with the final accented unison in m. 93.
