    The Hague, The Netherlands
    Difficulty Level:
  • May 23, 2013 Spectacular piano piece

This piece was written while Martland was in South Africa visiting his (remarried) mother for the first time in years. Kgakala means "sunrise". He was then studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. This piece won the Stockhausen Piano Award (Italy 1984) and was written shortly before and sometimes...

during "Babi Yar" for three orchestras. Martland was shortly afterwards recorded by Factory Records (i.e. Joy Division, New Order, Duratti Column) as one of the first modern classical composers to be added to their catalogue and founded his own band.Martland passed away at 53 years old in May 2013 in London.
