By My Side, by award-winning SF Bay Area composer/pianist Justin Levitt, is a collection of six original piano solos with accompanying MP3's (to receive MP3's send email to justin.pianist@gmail.com with receipt). Two of the six pieces (By My Side and The Villain) won top awards in the Music Teachers' Association of California's State Composition Competition in 2015, but all six are truly exceptional.
Calling his genre "Life Music," Levitt creates music that comes from the heart, expressing life experiences and emotions. The introductory pages include a composer bio and message from Levitt as well as a brief explanation about the inspiration for each piece. It's a beautiful book - The playing styles are varied and very expressive, making the pieces fun to play. This music is not intended for beginning piano students, but is geared more for intermediate to early-advanced pianists. It also provides excellent teaching material and exciting recital pieces!
The six piano solos range from the tender "Love for You" and "By My Side" to the wild and fun-filled "The Villain," which includes the instruction to play "with shades on" - complete with graphic! "Carnival" is a minor key waltz that sounds more than a little sinister for the first half, becoming more playful and innocent in the second. Also included are the expansive "My Americana" and the gentle "Goodbye for Now, but Not Forever." These pieces will appeal to pianists of all ages and will provide hours and even years of piano-playing enjoyment. Very highly recommended!
