In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, causedhim to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!

In 1938 schreef Shostakovitch zijn tweede Jazz Suite. Deze suite werdoorspronkelijk gecomponeerd voor volledig symfonieorkest, uitgebreid metvier saxofoons, accordeon en gitaar. Waltz No. 2 uit deze suite is beter bekendals'The Second Waltz', een uitvoering van het orkest van Andre Rieu uit 1994. In dit jaar brengt Rieu het album Straus & Co uit. Een van de composities op het album is Rieu's populaire interpretatie van Waltz No. 2 . Rieuscoort hiermee een gigantische hit. Het werk haalde zelfs de nummervijf positie in de Top 40 en bleef 28 weken in deze lijst staan. Johan de Meijschreef dit swingende arrangement voor harmonie- en fanfareorkest.

Geburtstag des beruhmten Geigers Andre Rieu bieten wir Ihnen hier eine Blasorchesteradaption von Rieus erstem grossen Erfolg an: den Waltz No. 2, das Paradestuck Andre Rieus, aus der Jazz Suite No. 2 von Dimitri Schostakowitsch. Ursprunglich fur ein Sinfonieorchester mit vier Saxophonen, einem Akkordeon und einer Gitarre geschrieben, weist schon das Original einen U-Musikstil auf. Johan de Meij schrieb eine schwungvolle Bearbeitung fur Blasorchester.

Si la Suite ndeg 2 pour Orchestre de Jazz (1938) temoigne de l'eclat et de l'esprit qui marquent l'orchestration de Chostakovitch, la musique ne correspond guere a l'idee que l'on se fait communement du jazz. La Suite ndeg 2 est enracinee dans la Vienne de Johann Strauss a l'image de la Valse ndeg 2 qui a fait irruption dans la vie des Francais grace a deux evenements : son utilisation comme musique illustrative dans une publicite televisee et son entree au repertoire du violoniste Andre Rieu.
