"J'ai vu le loup” is an old French song in which the Gregorian chant tune of "Dies Irae" becomes a lively dance. The lyrics describe seeing the wolf, the fox, and the hare (possibly the King, the Church, and the Landlord) eating, drinking, and dancing. Variations of this song seem to exist from as early as the 13th century, and can be found in several European countries as well as in modern Cajun and Quebec French versions. Even modern pop and rap performers have made use of it. This bass-heavy recorder arrangement begins simply, then builds throughout to a frenzied, syncopated finale. Each part has its own interest. An extra copy of the great bass part is included, written in the treble clef so that the instrument may be played “as if it were a big tenor”.
