"Invocation," originally titled "Prélude," was completed by 29 May 1987, but remained in keyboard score until I orchestrated it for strings in the autumn of 2001. Because the tragic assault by Muslim extremists against the United States of 11 September 2001 left such a strong and painful impression, I decided to dedicate the score to the memory of the victims of global terrorism. I hoped it would thus serve as a balm for wounded minds and hearts in need or healing. This is a short work of several minutes' duration lightly scored in four parts, entirely omitting the stringed basses. Its character is pervasively ethereal, in part because of the emphasis on the upper strings, but not less so because of its slow tempo and sustained style, with many long tied notes. This poses a technical challenge for the individual player, as (s)he must change bow direction while holding on to a given pitch and avoiding any audible tonal deviation. "Invocation" also explores a fairly wide dynamic range, calling throughout for careful control to achieve its full affect. I believe this nonsectarian work of sacred character will find its place in a variety of liturgical and ceremonial contexts, and hope that it will bring comfort to those who suffer, regardless of the cause.
