Composed by Alexander Borodin in 1880," In the Steppes of Central Asia " is a is a symphonic poem dedicated to Franz Liszt.
In the Steppes of Central Asia , was composed to commemorate Emperor Alexander II of Russia, whom played a key role in much of the expansion of the Russian Empire eastward. This work has been a celebrated concert selection since its debut on April 20th, 1880 in St. Petersburg ( under the conducted direction of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov ) .
The piece tells a story of the collaboration between Russians and Asians in the steppe lands of the Caucasus. A caravan of Central Asians is crossing the desert under the protection of Russian troops. The opening theme, representing the Russians, is noted at the beginning and after that the sounds of an ornate eastern melody representing the Asians. The melodies eventually blend and create two ethnic melodies that creates something new and distinct. The composer states the traveling theme is heard in short accented phrasings, represents the plodding hoofs of the horses and camels. The piece ends in the Russian melody.

Would be a great piece for concerts, seasonal, earth based themes, locational themed programs, Russian / Asian / Romantic period music. Culture based programs, educational, as well as a great piece for you flute ensemble for tonality, blending, shading and coloring sound, and blending.
This piece will be one in the flute choir collection that your group will come back to time and time again, because of his grandeur themes , yet beautiful simplistic melodies . Piece paints wonderful imagery of travel in The Steppes of Central Asia.

The composer provided the following description in a note to the score:
In the silence of the monotonous steppes of Central Asia is heard the unfamiliar sound of a peaceful Russian song. From the distance we hear the approach of horses and camels and the bizarre and melancholy notes of an oriental melody. A caravan approaches, escorted by Russian soldiers, and continues safely on its way through the immense desert. It disappears slowly. The notes of the Russian and Asiatic melodies join in a common harmony, which dies away as the caravan disappears in the distance.
