When West Side Story madeits Broadway debut on September 26, 1957 to rave reviews it proved that a serious American musical was not onlypossible, but could be an enormous popular success. It ran for 973performances on Broadway and was made into a hit movie. Leonard Bernstein's irresistibly tuneful music and Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics made songs like "I Feel Pretty" instant classics. In the bridal shop where she works, Maria sings about being happy and feeling beautiful because she is "loved by a pretty wonderful boy", while her coworkers tease her about her silly behavior. Bernstein's deliciously Latin-flavored rhythms give this music an effervescent charm. The file includes the full score and all four parts.
