Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) composed the volume of sevensongs entitled Gypsy Songs,Op. 55, for the excellent German tenor Gustav Walter (1834-1910), a member ofthe WienerHofoper (Vienna Court Opera). He thus wrote them to the German translations ofpoemsadapted for him by their author, Czech poet Adolf Hejduk. The original Simrockeditionfrom 1880 only came with a text in German; a further edition from 1881 nowcontainedCzech and English versions. The songs proved to be extremely popular withsingersand audiences alike; the fourth one ("Songs my mother taught me")became one ofthe most famous of its kind in the world repertoire. In this volume, the songsaretransposed for upper voices (soprano/tenor). The vocal text is here publishedinits Czech, English and German versions.
