Composed by Public Domain. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christmas. Score and parts. 13 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #483269. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808630).The words to this hymn, written by John Mason Neale in 1853, are based on the legend of an actual person, Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia. Neale’s lyrics were set to a song written in the 13th century celebrating spring, "Tempus adest floridum."
This arrangement launches right into the melody, upper and lower brass playing alternating phrases. The second time through features the trombone in an upbeat variation, which leads to a change of key and an ensemble finish. Use this one between longer numbers or to combine with other short carols.
This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 1 minute, 18 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at lessmith@ufl.edu.
