Frozen Blast is a modernist tour de force for string orchestra and string quartet by the Edinburgh-based composer Shiori Usui, who is originally from Japan.

According to the composer:

"The initial inspiration for Frozen Blast was the sculpture/installation ‘Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View’ (1991) by the British artist Cornelia Parker. I sought to regenerate the image of the work and expand it through my own musical
language, through structure, colour/timbre and rhythmic/musical gestures. I also wished to experiment with the way that sound travels across the string orchestra on stage.

The work was premièred by the Edinburgh Contemporary Music Ensemble, conducted by James Lowe, at its inaugural concert on 2nd December 2007 in the Reid Concert Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland."
