Back to School 2015:Four Preludes, for SATB choir, string orchestra and piano, was commissioned by Composersand Schools in Concert for the Milwaukee High School of the Arts. It was written in February of2013 and premiered at Marquette University’s Varsity Theater, Milwaukee, 4 June 2013.This is a work inspired exclusively by the T. S. Eliot text on which it is based. (Eliot’s FourPreludes was first published in the July 1915 issue of Wyndham Lewis’s Blast, and subsequentlycollected in 1917 in Eliot’s first volume of poetry, Prufrock and Other Observations.) Therhythm and imagery of these words—at turns dramatic and disarming, gritty and luminescent—were the well-spring for the music. Each of the four preludes is presented in its own harmonicand declamatory environment, with some thematic gestures shared among the four movements,as a means of unifying the work. The strings and keyboard are a full partner in this music, ratherthan simply an accompaniment to the choir, with the strings in particular executing a number ofextended techniques—from sul ponticello and sul tasto, to Bartok pizzicato, natural and artificialharmonics to double and triple stops to thrown bows and expressive glissandi—in an effort tofurther underline this magnificent text. Over the course of seven minutes, Four Preludesattempts to capture the beauty and power of this poetry, from the dramatic opening measures tothe quietly expressive conclusion. “An infinitely gentle, infinitely suffering thing ….”DURATION: 7:30CONTACT: lcmartistsmgmt@gmail.comwww.geoffreygordoncomposer.comhttps://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-gordon-composerhttps://twitter.com/ggcomposerhttps://www.youtube.com/user/LCMArtistsManagementASCAP.
