Having been drawn in by Tuur's orchestral music, I first checked out his piano sonata (1985) which I can't recommend highly enough. Already being such a fan, I thought I'd check these 4 sketches out only to be disappointed. While my expectations were indeed set up by...

the sonata, I still find that these pieces don't connect to each other, nor could they stand alone -rather they are collected under a generic title, "four pieces" (and they are short, too, for the money.) There are some passages with appeal, but mostly these feel like an embryo-form of the sonata. As an experienced player, I would recommend this set only if you are a die-hard fan of Tuur, and since this makes a weak introduction to his marvelous talent as a composer. For myself, I don't think I'll be getting the enjoyment value for the money that I have already gotten from Tuur's Sonata.
