A wonderful work accessible by even young bands, FLOURISHFOR WIND BAND by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is a staplein the repertoire for wind groups.
This Special Tuba part is a minoradjustment of RVW’s original part. As seen in the first sample page, theoriginal contained multiple octave doublings for the tuba section. While thisworks well for mature sections with 4 or more players, the octave choicespresent problems for younger players or bands with fewer tuba players. Byeliminating the various octave doublings, you:
1. Remove the necessity of editing theoriginal part yourself, telling your tuba/s which octave to play at every spot.
2. Much cleaner page and easier for the playerto read than marking up the original with octaves scratched out orcircled, etc.
3. Ensure that the section plays the sameline/octave every time (no options for when they get bored).
4. Create a more consistent balance among theensemble as some of the notes (low F and G) will be notably softer than theoctave above. If you have only 1 tubist, and they opt for the lowest notes atcertain spots, your balance will suffer. And odds are they will have to omitsome notes as they recover air from playing the lowest notes.
