Forward and Bach-ward by J. S. Bach. Bach must have had a wonderful sense of humor. In this "crab" canon, from his "Musical Offering," one player reads the music in the normal fashion. The other player begins on the last note and reads the music backwards. Notice the ties that go across the bar lines. 2. Aylesford Dance by G. F. Handel. This was written while visiting Lord Aylesford in England during the 18th century, and remained hidden and unknown until it was discovered at an auction in 1918. 3. Minuet by J. Krieger. Although most songs begin with a down bow, the natural phrasing in the two parts of this arrangement requires different bowings. 4. The Path to Picardy by J. L. Klim. The time signature or 4/2 gives the half note the beat in this 20th century duet written in a modal, in the Baroque style. Notice the major chord on the last note, the "Picardie Third." 5. Gavotte by A. Corelli. In this arrangement, you find many examples of the 4th finger extension. It is a very convenient fingering, and saves you from shifting into a higher position. The dots indicate a Baroque marcato stroke.
