Movement I, which is about three minutes in length, features technical extremes, a wide range of timbres, and descending odd time signatures that provide a sense of gradual disorganization. The main theme is a simple step-wise melody that is repeated within a vast number of keys, and often in the inner voices of modern harmonies. After a meandering bridge that disregards the barlines, the theme returns in a terrifying climax, only to be quickly shattered by dissonance and flung lifelessly to the deep end of the instrument.
