    S.F. "East Bay"
    Difficulty Level:
  • September 29, 2016 XLNT fiddle book!

My fiddle "mentor" sez this book has been around a long time — but this is my first encounter with it. Wow! The author presents tons of interesting tips, tricks, and historical background for each "chune." There are pieces that will interest experienced beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. A "must-own...

" for every player with interest in Celtic music.

This book was my entre to traditional music when it came out 30 years ago, and I still love it. One caveat; this is NOT a '101 Session Tunes' collection. Williamson was a big time performer in the 1960s, some of these tunes are performance pieces, he includes variations both...

original and traditional. He starts each section with easier tunes, and the arrangements are accesible throughout. There is also some history of trad music here, some fiddle playing instruction, history of the tunes, etc.

  • June 06, 2004 A good starting point

An easily accessible tune book with plenty to keep you going. The CD is a great tool although it can be annoying for those starting out when the CD differs from the notation! All good listening practice. Another slight problem: no clear indication of tempo is given but if you...

're already into this style, you can probably cope with that. It also gives you an idea of where to find recordings of some of the tunes. A good source book for more than just the usual Irish/Scottish stuff because it has some Welsh and English tunes. Being English, it's nice to see our folk music represented. All the English stuff in here was new to me too. I would definitely buy it again.

  • September 07, 2001 Good solid fiddle book

Williamson has chosen a good range of traditional tunes for the serious beginner or early intermediate player. My only criticism is that he appears to have "dumbed down" some tunes for the beginning player without noting that fact. The most flagrant example of this is the Shetland tune "Chris'mas...

Day i'th Moornin,'" which I have heard (and played) in strongly marked strathspey time for 20 years -- he has revised it to straight eighth notes and it sounds bizarre (not to mention very un-Shetland) as written. But this is still a good and very worthwhile book. My copy has a CD inserted in the front cover so that you can listen to the tunes.
