Following the publication of Act I at the beginning of this year, a critical edition of Act II of The Valkyrie is now available too. This volume was also prepared on the basis of close examination of the first edition of the score and the engraver's proofs, which have fortunately come to light again. Rehearsal comments written on the music of the score by assistant conductors (Porges, Kniese, Levi and Mottl) at the Festspiele in 1876 • in many instances calling for a distinctly different sound • are a particularly valuable feature of this edition.
