Our source for Coventry Carol istaken from Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, a nativity play from acycle of 10 plays from the life of Christ. The Coventry Mystery Plays opened in1392. Our earliest text of the play and this carol is dated 1534. A secondedition of the play that included the music was published in 1591. Scholarsbelieve the play to be much older. Three mothers with their children enter thestage after Joseph is warned to flee to Egypt to create this scene.
This drama tells the story of Christ’s birthfrom the annunciation to the brutal slaying of the babies of Bethlehem. Thisparticular song mourns the children lost when Herod ruthlessly attempts to eliminatethis threat to his throne. I believe that the darkness of the carol, hints thatChrist will Himself die a tragic death.
The lyrics for O Sacred Head NowWounded were penned by Bernard of Clairvaux (ca 1153). The melody wascomposed by Hans L Hassler (ca 1601) and its harmonization by Johann SebastianBach (1729).
