Ten progessively difficult chapters, containing dozens of improvisational exercises, explore jazz improvisation from creative, melodic and technical perspectives. The book is designed to meet all of the national standards and frameworks for music education and is a comprehensive improvisational curriculum for individual musicians or group classes. The book includes a 52 track play-a-long and demonstration CD. Readers will learn that improvisation is about more than technique, right notes, and playing patterns. Improvisation is about style, phrasing control, creative design and intent, and learning to speak the language of jazz.

This is the first book I've found that actually talks about improvisation without just saying "here's the scale...now play". It really helped me improve my approach and get better. I'm an adult learner and this was just great for me.

This was really good. I play piano. The book talks about learning the creative and communicative side of jazz-focuses on phrases, developing solos etc. Really comprehensive approach, especially for the blues. The CD was dynamite! Swinging play-a-long tracks and tons of demonstration solos-each with a transcription...

in the book. I'd recommend it...
