Critical edition by Olivier Foures. Among the hundreds of violin concertos written by Vivaldi, which stand at the centre of his activity as a virtuoso, there are three that are in part incomplete: RV 370, RV 378 and RV 745. While only a portion of the first movement has survived in the case of RV 378, RV 320 lacks only a few bars at the end of its third movement, and only the last movement of RV 745 is extant. Incompleteness of this nature does, however, result in performable and perfectly enjoyable texts. The manuscripts of these three concertos are all autograph and datable to Vivaldi's last creative period (c. 1730-1741), years in which the Red Priest mixes his various musicalexperiences to create a language that is increasingly disparate and introspective. With the major-minor chiaroscuro of the first movement of the concerto RV 320, the spirited virtuosity of the RV 378 and the more mechanical virtuosity of RV 745, these three concertos offer a cross-section of the imagination and complexity that Vivaldi brings to the treatment of the violin in his late maturity.

Fra le centinaia di concerti per violino composti da Antonio Vivaldi - il genere strumentale che meglio rappresenta il fulcro della sua attivita di virtuoso e di compositore - se ne trovano tre sopravvissuti in forma incompleta: RV 320, RV 378 e RV 745. Mentre di RV 378 ci e pervenuta unicamente una parte del movimento iniziale, al concerto RV 320 mancano soltanto poche battute alla fine di quello conclusivo, che e altresi l'unico - quantunque completo - conservatosi del concerto RV 745. Si tratta, in tutti e tre i casi, diun'incompiutezza tale da non pregiudicare la restituzione di un testo perfettamente fruibile ed eseguibile. I manoscritti che trasmettono questi tre lavori sono tutti autografi e risalgono all'ultimo periodo creativo di Vivaldi (1730ca-1741), un'epoca in cui il Prete rosso attinse alle sue esperienze musicali pregresse per riplasmarle in un linguaggio sempre piu eterogeneo e introspettivo. Il chiaroscuro modale che caratterizza il primo movimento del concerto RV 320, l'acceso virtuosismo del concerto RV 378 e quello piu controllato di RV 745, ci offrono uno spaccato esemplare della fantasia e della complessita che caratterizzano la scrittura violinistica vivaldiana colte nella fase della loro piena maturita.
