Darren Herring, a new composer to WLP, has set this respected hymn by eighteenth-century author Charles Wesley. The expressive minor-key melody is stated in unison; the composer adds a four-voice texture in the subsequent verse. Then the "Veni Emmanuel/O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" chant melody is skillfully incorporated in the men's lower voice as the women sing the original melody in unison above. The last verse gives the women a chance to sing the ancient chant as the men sing the initial melody. Well constructed, and it really works! Listen and put this one in your choir's folders this fall.
