The words of this hymnthat we know today first appeared in 1758 in a collection of poetry used in achurch meeting in Cambridge, UK. The folk melody, named Hallelujah or GoodShepherd, appeared in 1813 in A Repository of Sacred Music, PartSecond published by John Wyeth in Pennsylvania. Wyeth was a compilerof music for the purpose of publishing, not a musician.

The tune of the hymn is called Nettleton. Asahel Nettleton was anevangelist from Connecticut who worked in New England. There is no indicationthat he wrote any music. The first appearance of this melody with the Come,Thou Fount of Every Blessing lyrics was published by Darius Jones in1852. Charles Ives used this folk melody in two of his compositions: FirstString Quartet and the song The Innate.

This duet is in the key ofD. The melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.
