It means living a useful life, leaving nothing behind but the warmth and light given to others. This opera/musical is about a group of pacifists who do manage to live candelescent lives. The surface story is about a young woman (Twimfina) who instead of going to college, runs off to be with her penpal boyfriend in a hostile, impoverished country. Sometimes penpals leave out facts about their lives. Twimfina's boyfriend has left out some whoppers. The “Candelescence” story is inspired by the lives of teachers Ma Wenzhong and Gu Qingyu in China.
