A pupil of the legendary pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and composition student of Alfredo Casella, Camillo Togni became one of Italy's most progressive composers in the latter half of the 20th century, his music recognized for its compelling expressiveness and poetic depth. This program shows distinct phases in Togni's artistic development, the Serenatas representing his ant-romantic moves away from chromaticism and towards serialist clarity, and onwards to the mastery and refinement in the Tre fantasie scherzose. Using a theme from The Art of Fugue, the Omaggio a Bach reveals an 18th century master's anticipation of the modern techniques of another two centuries later.
