The pieces that make up Burnhan were influenced by a pond at a park in New Jersey that I frequented in my childhood. The park had baseball fields, basketball courts and other lively play areas. Yet, one could always wander over to the pond and see the swans, hear a woodpecker or be delighted by the sight of a hummingbird.
Sarabande: The sarabande is aestival music to me: its patient steps and simple elegance belong in the early Summer, always to be my favorite season.
Pica Pau: The bird Pica Pau (Portuguese for woodpecker) is not known for its melodious song. I am mesmerized by their movements; performing the most industrious, adorable and often upside-down dance.
Wildflower: If one plants a wildflower it is nolonger wild. A wildflower brings delight along with surprise as we stumble upon this glorious gift of nature.
Beija Flor: The bird Beija Flor (Portuguese for hummingbird) is another bird not known for its song. Its skitter flight can amuse and amaze, yet never diminish the profound beauty of this tiny creature.
Silver Swan: The swan is another example of a bird not known for its call. The legend of the swan’s final breath being a song of rapturous beauty and the work of Orlando Gibbons inspired the title of this final piece in this collection.
Hopefully, these pieces will bring you the opportunity, if only in spirit, to wander over to the pond and experience the joy of nature.
