Composed by Gerard Jouannest and Jacques Brel. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. Contemporary. Octavo. 17 pages. Scott S. Stewart #6477317. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.955860).

Brel’s song, Brussels (Bruxelles), from his 6th album Les Bourgeois (1962) at first glance tells of Brel’s relationship to the city of his birth.  When in actuality it reeks of irony and speaks of denying reality; for this is a song about the romanticism of war while ignoring the horrors going on around it.  It is a cautionary tale to "keep our eyes open, learn from the past, and be forever vigilant."  This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  It uses (briefly) Brel’s original French lyrics and then, Eric Blau’s excellent English text. Performance time: 3:20+-
