From a formal point of view, compared to the immediately preceding Sonatas, the Sonata op. 28 seems to represent a step backwards, towards the monumental model of the concert Sonata in 4 movements, which had interested Beethoven in his earlier Sonatas. Thus the op. 28 includes a sonata form, a slow tempo, a Scherzo, and a Rondò. The innovations lie elsewhere. It is no coincidence that this Sonata - published by the Bureau of arts and industries in August 1802 - is known with the nickname of “Pastorale”, apocryphal but attributed to it already in an 1805 edition. It would be superfluous to say that the score has no relationship with the Symphony with the same name (n.6) of 1808, if not for the fact that both pages make use of some styles used to evoke pastoral music - codified by a long tradition that has its roots in Corelli, Scarlatti, Händel - in particular, for the Sonata, those echoing the sound of bagpipes, with a so-called "harmonic pedal”, drone-like effects and the ternary subdivisions of time. It is precisely this arcadian, contemplative aspect, aimed at blurring the contrasts, which attributes a strong coherence to this wonderful piece, and the masterful writing and effects employed by Beethoven make this a perfect fit for a string quartet arrangement.
