Perhaps the most remarkable phenomenon in the history of seventeenth-century European music is the formidable and irreversible rise of instrumental music. The program recorded here exhibits the latest advances of instrumental music in two fields that are among the favorite places of the visual arts, and in particular of the seventeenth century painting: the battle and the storm. Common to both parties, very high expressive power, an energy and dynamism, the event nature of the storm as in human ferocity of the battle, reach the intensity peak conceivable by man of that era. It unfolds in these tracks a distinctive collection of rhythmic-melodic formulas, tonal uses, and specific dynamic solutions. Similarities weave through these works such as the agitated style utilized in Monteverdi's Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda and the attacking of the windmills in the quixotic suites by Telemann. This interesting collection of pieces is an aural painting taking the listener to the heart of the storm and the heat of the battle.
