Published by Stephanie K Andrews (S0.95491).I was inspired to write this setting of “Ave Maria” as this prayer to Mary has held special significance in my life, particularly with regard to Mary as feminine revelation of the mystical divine and a source of comfort and protection. The piece itself is based on the well-known plainchant; however, beyond the opening “Ave Maria” statement, the musical material departs from the original. As the listener will note, while the Latin text setting is written in a medieval musical idiom, its English counterpart is expressed in a blend of traditional plainchant and contemporary musical language. It is hoped that the words and music of this prayer communicate to the listener a sense of prayers answered, comfort, and hope restored.
