In the early 1980s, Jay Ungar and his wife were running the Ashokan Camp, a summer arts school specializing in fiddling and dancing. Ungar composed this wistful waltz tune in 1982 to mark the conclusion of the of the camp season. He had traveled through Scotland earlier in the summer, and wanted to write a tune in the style of a Scottish lament—something that would capture the sense of sadness that the camp, and all the camaraderie and joy it represented, would be ending. In 1984 Ken Burns was searching for music to serve as the theme song of his documentary The Civil War. He heard Burns' recording of "Ashokan Farewell," got permission to use the song in the documentary, and the rest is--indeed--history. This beautiful arrangement for string orchestra captures in full the mournful and hopeful mood of Ungar's waltz tune. The file includes the full score and all five parts.
