Composed by Ulvi Cemal Erkin. Arranged by Kathryn Woodard. 20th Century. Score,Set of Parts. 22 pages. Published by Sonic Crossroads (S0.41917).

Ulvi Cemal Erkin was a prominent Turkish composer. He is known as one of the “Turkish Five” a group of composers who represented Turkey’s nationalist trend in music. Similar to other nationalist composers of the time, such as Sibelius, Bartok and of course, the earlier “Russian Five,” Erkin and others composed Western classical music but often infused their works with elements from Turkish folk and classical music. In these pieces, composed originally for piano in 1931, the modal melodies and the predominant use of fourths and fifths for harmonic accompaniment are striking references to Turkish folk music. These pieces can be programmed individually or as a set. The first two are suitable for middle school ensembles (Grade 3) and the double bass part is optional. The last piece is clearly more virtuosic and calls for divisi viola and cello sections (Grade 4). (Separate parts provided.) Audio sample is of the first movt.
