Turkey in the Straw is a well known American folk song from the early nineteenth century. It is suggested that the first part of the song was derived from the ballad My Grandmother Lived in Yonder Little Green, which was further derived from the Irish ballad The Old Rose Tree. Originally written for fiddle players, it was first popularized in the 1820s by touring minstrel shows. Tempos are important in Variations. The bright sections (opening),and at m. 27 should be pushed. The 6/8 sections should be played in a flowing manner. The alto saxophone solo at m. 71 is cued with clarinet 1; either or both may be played. At m. 55 the style is march-like. The low brass and woodwinds at m. 60 play the theme in a minor key, and it should be played in a martial manner: strong and accented. Watch the rall. at m. 67. The opening , repeated at m. 79, arrives at the four held half-note chords (m. 91, strong, ff) and to the Presto at m. 93. The metronome marking here is 120, but for the best ending play as fast as possible.
