Composed by Brandon Nelson. Concert,Contemporary. 4 pages. Brandon Nelson #3000131. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912932).

Written as part of a cycle of pieces celebrating Japanese mythology, this solo for unaccompanied alto flute depicts the goddess Amaterasu. She is seen as not only the goddess of the sun, but also of the universe. The name Amaterasu derived from Amateru meaning "shining in heaven." The Emperors of Japan are considered to be direct descendants of Amaterasu.

The music grows gradually in boldness, brightness, and animation. The rhythm makes use of a unique notation system which allows the performer a degree of say in the creation of the landscape, just as Amaterasu helped to paint the landscape of Japan. The pitches are derived from traditional Japanese pentatonic scales.

Intermediate level, suitable for any occasion. Unaccompanied alto flute.
