Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed

By Deborah Govenor

SATB choir
Composed by Deborah Govenor. Sacred. Octavo. Beckenhorst Press #BP1323. Published by Beckenhorst Press (BP.1323).

Item Number: BP.1323

Deborah Govenor's beautiful a cappella setting of Isaac Watts' immortal words depicting the pain and suffering of the crucified Savior. The newly composed melody, the use of flute obbligato and impeccable vocal lines make this a great selection for Good Friday, Holy Communion or any time in the Lenten season. Flute part for the above included in the octavo.

We used this for Good Friday. It is a nice anthem. The harmony is interesting but not overly difficult. There are similarities between the stanzas the cut down on your rehearsal time. There is room for some expressiveness in terms of altered tempos and changing dynamics.

This composition sets the text very expressively. I have used it without the optional flute and it works equally well.
