Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990) was an American composer known as the "Dean of American Composers" and especially in the 1930's and 1040's wrote in a clear, accessible style, basing much of his music on folk songs or folk-like music materials. His Old American Songs for voice and piano (early 1950's) consists of two sets of publications of 5 songs each. This setting by John Gibson for woodwind quartet is a selection of 5 songs. They are: Simple Gifts (a Shaker song used in the earlier Appalachian Spring), Long Time Ago (Ballad), I Bought Me a Cat (children's song), The Little Horses (lullaby), and Ching-A-Ring Chaw. Each piece can be played separately or as a group of songs. It is set for woodwind quartet (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, and bassoon. The 5 songs run about 9 1/2 minutes.
