"A place toward other places" features four contemporary works with clarinet soloist, two of them premiere recordings. The program opens with Carter's Clarinet Concerto, in which the soloist partners with smaller families within the orchestra in turn before the whole band joins in. The title piece, Aaron Helgeson's A place toward other places, written for Richard Hawkins, acts as a kind of soliloquy, a personal aside from a clarinetist who in other contexts is so expert at becoming a kind of musical chameleon. Benjamin Broening's Clarinet Concerto, also composed for Hawkins, features a new middle movement, while Albright's Clarinet Quintet pays homage to Mozart and Brahms and their respective contributions to the ensemble. Clarinetist Richard Hawkins made his solo debut at the Kennedy Center with Mstislav Rostropovich and the National Symphony Orchestra in 1992. After several years at Interlochen, and a brief tenure at Depaul University, Hawkins joined the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2001.
