Composer's Notes:

The text for this piece was the winning poem of the RealNewMusic poetry competition 2010, written by Karlyn Louise Risher. This piece was conceived as a duet for two instruments - the oboe and soprano voice. As such, I maintained a fair amount of equality between both parts - each performer has an equally important role in portraying the message of the text. Harmonically, the piece is based around several modal scales, interchanging and mixing them as needed. I sought to paint the text as frequently as possible; this will be evident with words such as gasping, swelling, and up. The concept of writing a piece using a contest-winning poem was fascinating. It was also interesting to see how my composition would be stretched as I was limited to writing the piece for my own instrument (oboe) and soprano.
