Miklos Rozsa's second string quartet op. 38 was written at the same time as his last film composition and is his last ensemble work. In the last years of his life, marked also by health problems, he only wrote individual works for solo instruments. In addition to numerous influences from film music, such as the use of the leitmotif technique and the typical motivic development, the work features a fiery, Hungarian-influenced scherzo and a finale with a fair amount of energy, varied textures and shifted meters. The dedicatee is Rozsa's compatriot, Antal Dorati, who also wrote the preface to the composer's autobiography.CDs:Flesch QuartetCD DCA 1105Tippett QuartetCD Naxos 8.572903.
