Lt is not unproblernatic to interpret Silvius Leopold Weiss's rnusic on the guitar or to edit it for this instrurnent, since the instrurnent Weiss wrote for, the Baroque lute, has a larger range, particularly in the bass, and thus offers a rnore variegated sound palette than the present-day guitar. Moreover, the lower tuning of the lute requires a transposition from the original key. The Melody and bass line of this transcription of the sonata have been left unchanged except for very few points, listed in the critical notes. The transposition to A rnajor is especially suited to the guitar, it since it permits a frequent use of the open strings. And whereas the original key of F rnajor would sound too low and dark on the guitar, it produces a brightly colored sound on the lute. Hence the guitar arrangernent of this sonata most likely approaches with great accuracy the intentions of the cornposer as to the rnelodic form and the sound, and convincingly reproduces the specific tone-color aesthetic of the late Baroque era.
