The latest in an ongoing series of Nocturnes for solo piano, Nocturne No. 4 was completed in June of 1992. It was commissioned by Northwest Arts for Andrew Wilde and premiered by him in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, in September of 1992. The Nocturne makes use of the piano's color--and pedal--effects. It presents two contrasting ideas, one lyrical and the other chorale-like, over a series of ostinato figures.
