Switzerland hasa rich tradition in folk music. Its diversity reflects the regional andcultural closeness of the Swiss nation. Influences from other Europeancountries have also shaped Swiss folk music since the early 19th century. Polkaand Mazurka have their roots in Poland, and the Scottish inScotland. The music has been passed down by word of mouth or in the records ofmusicians in books.

Between 1940 and 1960, the ethnomusicologist Hanny Christen travelled throughSwitzerland and collected thousands of melodies from the period between 1800and 1960. Musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to copytheir own written dance booklets in full. It is thanks to her that over 12,000instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition(costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) have been saved from beingforgotten.

The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type ofdance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The arranger would liketo fill a gap and has therefore adapted some folk dances from this largecollection* for flutes.

The melody is taken directly from the Hanny Christen collection. Thesecond voice was not quite typical for this but was additionally composed to beas flutistic as possible and follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody ofits own. (Difficulty grade 3 +)

The arranger, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She livesin the Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and teaches. She is involved in various musical projects (www.helene-schulthess.ch).  .
