The Largo movement is dark and moody, working from the lower to upper register through a series of syncopated melodies. The Andante expands the arpeggiated aspects of the work, leaping through a gorgeous series of B-major sequences spanning the full range of the bassoon. In the moderato movement, an initial aggressive articulated theme gives way to another series of wide arpeggios before weaving the two themes together for a dramatic finish. Together this piece presents unique music that only a solo bassoon could offer.
